The King and I

The King and I

Anna, an English schoolteacher, and the King of Siam discuss the banquet and performance they just held that night in honor of the English ambassador’s visit to Siam. There is very intense romantic energy between them, and Anna teaches him how to polka (“Shall We Dance”). The King’s prime minister then enters, announcing that they have captured the king’s new wife, Tuptim, who had attempted to run away with her lover. The king orders her to be beaten, and Anna angrily tries to convince him otherwise.
