Frances Farmer is a Hollywood starlet in the early 1940’s. But despite her budding success, her life in Hollywood drives her to the brink of insanity. Her selfish, controlling mother, the cruelty of the studio system, and her own alcohol abuse don’t help. She leaves the exploitation of Hollywood to join the Group Theatre in New York, and soon becomes the mistress of Clifford Odets, the playwright whose new show, “Golden Boy,” she is starring in. The show is about to move to London. She comes home to Clifford’s apartment to find the show’s producer, Harold Clurman, there.
