Hilary has just been through a “break-up”: she has walked in on her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She left, and now she’s staying with her mother as she looks for a job. She’s not well-educated or particularly skilled in anything. She answers an ad for a live-in nurse. After a long wait in the parlor of an imposing San Francisco mansion, she is turned away from the house, without an interview, by Victor’s father. Victor, however, catches sight of her and has his butler call her back and show her to his private entrance. Victor is about the same age as Hilary; he has leukemia and needs constant care.
