Rocky Sullivan and Jerry Connolly are childhood friends who robbed a railroad car as kids. As they ran from the police, Rocky saved Jerry's life by pulling him out of the way of a train. Rocky was caught, but Jerry escaped. Rocky grows up to become a notorious gangster, while Jerry has become a priest. Rocky returns to his old neighborhood, where Jerry is running a home that intends to keep young boys away from a life of crime. Rocky tries to slip Jerry some dirty money to help build a new gym at his home for boys, but Jerry refuses, revealing how truly different they've become.
